Episode 59: Is That For True?

Set your clock to Turner Time, as this week’s 6:05 Superpodcast has arrived!  Tom Robinson is back in the co-host chair, joining The Great Brian Last for another week of The Only Podcast That Matters! This episode features:

– Another edition of In The News, where Jim Cornette & TGBL look at classic newspaper stories about professional wrestling.  Topics this week include athletic commissions, worked street fights for publicity, and the story of Sputnik Monroe’s 1960 arrest.

– Dan Farren joins the show to discuss the late Bobby Shane.  Dan tells us about his shock when Bobby Shane showed up in January of 1975 to work a week for the Los Angeles office.  We hear details about how Shane was in the ring and what kind of heat he drew without even doing an interview.  Dan will also share the story of Bobby Shane’s last main event, which he witnessed.

– TGBL & TR discuss a wide range of issues, including Stan Lane’s ability to pick up women, “Superfly” Sivi Afi, the New Buddha Khan and much more!  Plus the wildest TRnac yet, the Handsome Boogie Man, Stuttering Tommy Rich, the Tom Robinson impression challenge and more!

Episode 49: Stunt Granny

Your weekly fix of the Superpodcast has arrived!  Popular co-host Tom Robinson is back in the co-host chair this week, joining The Great Brian Last, for another fun trip on the Mothership!  This week’s show features:

– An extensive interview with Colt Toombs, the son of Roddy Piper.  Colt and his sister Ariel’s book on their father, “Rowdy,” was recently published and is our Book Of The Week.  Colt talks about the process of putting this book together and tracing his father’s story, as well as what Roddy’s intentions were when he started putting this book together.  This fun talk illuminates a Roddy Piper that fans never got to know and explains the origins of the rowdy one!

– Classic audio from October 18, 1983 of Captain Lou Albano and Fred Blassie on Rod Luck’s radio show in Philadelphia.  This show, recorded the day after the famous Jimmy Snuka cage match with Don Muraco and less than a week after the passing of the Grand Wizard, is a fascinating time capsule to the period right before the WWF would aggressively compete against the rest of the wrestling industry.  Callers ask about Hulk Hogan, Crusher Verdu, Ric Flair, the status of the WWF Championship in the magazines and more!

– Dan Farren joins the show again to discuss his appearance as the masked referee on the infamous television special Exposed: Pro Wrestling’s Greatest Secrets.

– As discussed on last week’s show, we get to hear John Tolos interviews from 1970 in Los Angeles.  These interviews, which were taped off TV for Bob Barnett, are the only example of Tolos’ amazing work during this period of his career.  Tolos discusses upcoming matches with Fred Blassie, Mil Mascaras and Man Mountain Mike.

– TGBL & TR talk about a multitude of topics, including Tony Schiavone, Bruno Sammartino, notorious fans, Jushin Liger, Halloween Havoc 1992, Dave Brown, Tom’s hatred of Tony Garea and night out with the Clique and much more!  Plus appearances from Impressionist Jim Ross & Stuttering Tommy Rich!  CALL SOMEBODY!

– Jim Cornette sharing his memories and thoughts about Chris Colt, as well as watching the Chris Colt Experience in action while supplying commentary.

– Les Thatcher talking about some of the earliest examples of merchandising in modern professional wrestling.  Les lets us know about his tee shirt company with the Brisco Brothers and Thunderbolt Patterson, as well as his work producing magazines for Mid Atlantic and the WWWF.  Les also talks about the development of his Personality Profile segments for Southeastern Championship Wrestling and his flirtation with joining the WWF in 1985.

– Dan Farren, longtime California referee, tells us all about the one time he worked for Herb Abrams and the UWF and why it wasn’t a great experience.

– Amy Lee joins the show again for the Dennis Of The Week, this time talking about the many Northeast wrestlers who Dennis Coralluzzo gave breaks to in the wrestling business.
