Episode 62: Sugar Hold Challenge

The Mothership has touched down and it is time for another week of the 6:05 Superpodcast!  The Great Brian Last is joined this week by popular co-host Scott Cornish for a packed show which features:

– Jim Cornette and Austin Idol join the show to celebrate the careers of Ivan Koloff and George “The Animal” Steele.

– Scott Teal makes his annual visit to the Superpodcast to discuss the 2017 docket for Crowbar Press.  Scott also shares the story of how he met Ivan Koloff, whose autobiography he published.  This conversation also touches on Gary Hart’s book, dealing with inaccuracies when writing a wrestler’s story, the importance of speaking to old timers to preserve wrestling’s history and much more!

– William Harding shares the amazing story of the night in 1981 that he got out of Bob Roop’s Sugar Hold and the difficulties he had in getting Angelo Poffo’s ICW to pay up the $1,000 he earned by doing such.  We also have some audio from Bob Roop, courtesy of Crowbar Press, talking about his memories of that night and the Sugar Hold Challenge.

Episode 61: Dogs Barking

The Superpodcast is back this week with a special episode, as The Great Brian Last and co-host Tom Robinson are both under the weather.  This shorter than usual episode features a couple of looks at the life and career of Chavo Guerrero.

– Jeff Walton, the longtime Los Angeles / LeBell wrestling promotion publicist and announcer, joins the show to discuss Chavo’s place in Los Angeles wrestling history.  In telling the story of Chavo in LA, Jeff gives a history of that office throughout the 1970’s and into it’s end in the early 1980’s.  Jeff talks about bookers Louis Tillet and Leo Garibaldi, the emergence of Roddy Piper, how the LA promotion lost it’s english speaking television and ended up on the Spanish International Network and more!  Jeff also discusses the end of Mike LeBell’s promotion and Vince McMahon’s arrival in Los Angeles in 1983.  A really fascinating look at one of wrestling’s legendary cities!

– Dr. Tom Prichard joins the show again this week to share his memories of Chavo.  Tom watched Chavo while he was growing up in Houston, was booked by Chavo in Los Angeles and was Chavo’s “rookie” in Texas.  Tom tells some great stories and sheds some light on what Chavo was like to work for and with.  Tom shares interesting stories about Chavo’s relationship with Bill Watts, the Paul Boesch retirement show in 1987, his last time running into Chavo and more!

Episode 60: International Sand Sculpture

The MOTHERSHIP has landed and it is time for another episode of the 6:05 Superpodcast!  This week The Great Brian Last is joined by former Smoky Mountain Wrestling champion Bobby Blaze for a packed show, which features:

– Austin Idol joins the show to make a big announcement about his latest project in conjunction with the Superpodcast!

– Part one of our conversation with Lynn Denton, otherwise known as The Grappler.  Lynn talks about breaking into wrestling and his early stops in Amarillo, Calgary, Mid Atlantic and Mid South.  We will hear his thoughts on the popularity of the Junkyard Dod & Kerry Von Erich, as well as an explanation of how the loaded boot works.  Lynn also shares his memories of Ric Flair, the Dynamite Kid, ribs that he witnessed and much more!  A really fun talk!

– TGBL & Bobby talk about a wide range of subjects, from Superfly Sivi Afi to illegal cable hookups.  Bobby also talks about doing jobs in the early 1990’s for the WWF, how his tour of Australia in 1993 came together, and why working with Sid Vicious wasn’t always easy.  All of that and TRnac, Stuttering Tommy Rich, the Handsome Boogie Man, a message from Ken Patera and much more!

Episode 59: Is That For True?

Set your clock to Turner Time, as this week’s 6:05 Superpodcast has arrived!  Tom Robinson is back in the co-host chair, joining The Great Brian Last for another week of The Only Podcast That Matters! This episode features:

– Another edition of In The News, where Jim Cornette & TGBL look at classic newspaper stories about professional wrestling.  Topics this week include athletic commissions, worked street fights for publicity, and the story of Sputnik Monroe’s 1960 arrest.

– Dan Farren joins the show to discuss the late Bobby Shane.  Dan tells us about his shock when Bobby Shane showed up in January of 1975 to work a week for the Los Angeles office.  We hear details about how Shane was in the ring and what kind of heat he drew without even doing an interview.  Dan will also share the story of Bobby Shane’s last main event, which he witnessed.

– Musician and podcaster Otis Gibbs joins the show to discuss the song Sputnik Monroe, off his new album Mount Renraw.  Otis talks about why the story of Sputnik inspired him to write the song, which we will hear at the conclusion of the interview.  We also hear about Otis growing up watching Dick The Bruiser in Indianapolis.

Episode 58: Complete Savage

It’s time to hop on the 6:05 once again for another week of the Superpodcast!  The Great Brian Last is joined this week by John McAdam, and this completely savage episode of the Mothership features:

– A look at the career of Jimmy Snuka, trying to weigh his accomplishments while acknowledging his scandals.  We look at 1983, when his career reached new heights while at the same time his demons led him down a dark road which culminated in the death of his girlfriend Nancy Argentino.  We talk about the major angles he was a part of, his popularity with WWF fans, and attempt to understand how to look at his place in wrestling history.

– Part two of our discussion with Tom Hankins, author of “The Mat, The Mob & Music,” sees Tom talk about his friendship with the legendary Dr. Jerry Graham.  We hear what the Doc thought about Eddie Graham, the McMahons, and Andre The Giant.  Tom also talks about his bar room run-in with Pat Patterson and how that led to his appearance on the famed 1992 episode of Donahue covering the WWF sex scandals.

– Australian wrestling historian Ed Lock joins the show again for part two of our discussion about World Championship Wrestling and Mario Milano.  Ed talks about 1973, which was the biggest year in Australian wrestling history and the last year Jim Barnett promoted there.  We hear about the change in ownership and how the promotion changes.  Ed also tells us about Mario Milano’s later years and where Mario’s place in Australian wrestling history is.

– Australian wrestling historian Ed Lock joins the show to discuss Mario Milano and the early days of Jim Barnett’s World Championship Wrestling promotion.  Ed talks about Barnett’s arrival in Australia, and what the wrestling landscape was like at that time.  We hear about Dominic DeNucci, Spiros Arion, Killer Kowalski, Gary Hart, Big Bad John and many other of the biggest stars to land down under.  This is a fascinating look at a territory whose stars many feel don’t get the respect they are due.

– Wrestling Historian Tom Burke is back, this week discussing Dr. Jerry Graham.  Tom was friends with the Doc, so we are able to hear both his knowledge of Graham’s career as well as personal anecdotes.  Tom also shares some great stories about Abe Ford, Tony Santos, The Vachons and more!

– Jeff Bowdren returns for part two of our discussion about the greatest wrestling matches and angles of the 1980’s.  Jeff talks about attending the first Crockett Cup in New Orleans, a wild night out for Terry Gordy in Japan, Giant Baba’s plans for Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen and much more!  Jeff also talks about the territory he grew up watching, Championship Wrestling from Florida, and shines a light on 1982 in the Sunshine State, which was filled with great matches and angles and saw the surprising emergence of David Von Erich as a heel.

Episode 55: Wrestling Prop

– Legendary Tennessee wrestling star Len Rossi joins the show to discuss his former tag team partner, the late Mario Milano, who just recently passed away.  Len also talks about teaming with Bearcat Brown, how their trailblazing team led to the desegregation of wrestling matches in the South, as well as their feud with Dr. Ken Ramey and the Interns, a feud considered one of the hottest in Southern wrestling history.  Len also shares his thoughts on George and Nick Gulas, as well as his son, the late Joey Rossi.  This talk is a unique chance to hear from one of the all-time greats of an era long gone!

– Wrestling historian Tom Burke is back to discuss his background working for The Ring Wrestling magazine, as well as the history of the WFIA.  Tom also shares the amazing story of how he ended up owning Pedro Morales’ WWWF World Championship belt.  Any conversation with Tom is filled with interesting and fun tidbits, and this one is no exception!

– Jeff Bowdren joins the show for part one of a discussion about his famed Greatest Matches Of The 80’s list in the 1989 Wrestling Observer Newsletter yearbook.  This fun talk goes in many directions, talking about Dump Matsumoto, Chigusa Nagayo, Lex Luger, Tiger Mask, and more, including the memorable moment when Jeff & Dave Meltzer ran into the Von Erichs in a hotel in Japan!
